Mental health during the pandemic
Whose mental health is most affected by lockdown and the COVID pandemic:
-
Young adults (18 to 24 year olds) reported suicidal thoughts at a rate more than double that of the population as a whole. This is the most vulnerable age group at any time.
-
Single Parents, particularly those of newborns to primary aged children (who are the most affected children of all age groups)
-
Women - more women than men reported feeling anxious, lonely, and hopeless due to the pandemic. This may be because they still bear most of caring and financial management responsibilities (and perhaps because they are more willing to talk about it!)
-
BAME – some communities have been disproportionately affected by Coronavirus due to systemic racism but also cultural attitudes to mental health in some communities may be a factor.
-
People with pre-existing mental health problems – particularly those with eating disorders, OCD, PTSD and personality disorders
